Abstract

Immigration, considered a subjectively-built construct loaded with estereotipes, has reemerged as the central element in demographic studies. Foreign population grows greatly in Chile, which makes more necessary that current research measures how locals actually react to them. This research handled that scenery, measuring xenophobia and racism, therefore accounting for two of the main prejudices towards immigrants. For accomplishing this, a measuring was performed among chileans of 16 years old and older, currently living in the Biobío and Metropolitan Regions. The data collection method was a Likert scale, which measured both prejudices: xenophobia and racism. The analysis allowed to conclude that prejudice towards immigrants supports itself mainly on xenophobia, and also that this prejudice is more present in the Metropolitan than in the Biobío Region. Finally, a statistical analysis of multiple linear regression determined an optimal trivariate model –composed by age, years of education and the respondent’s region–, which explains the variations in the xenophobia scale by 54%
