Abstract

The concept of technocracy is commonly used to understand the progressive processes of rationalisation and technification of politics in modern societies. However, the literature review shows certain ambiguities about this concept that would imply developing it more precisely. This article presents the results of a theoretical investigation of the concept of technocracy. First, a historical review of technocracy and its development in Latin American societies is presented. Secondly, a theoretical review of the concept is carried out with the aim of elaborating an ideal type of technocracy. In this way, it is defined that the concept of technocracy is composed of a social group dimension, an institutional dimension and, finally, an ideological dimension.
