Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the 2013 presidential elections, which led to Bachelet's victory, from the perspective of social classes, with the central question of the political alignment of the classes in this electoral contest, which also involves analysing the abstention of the social classes. For this purpose, data from the CEP survey No. 70, prior to the presidential elections, were used. The construction of social classes is based on Erik Olin Wright's work on social structure, but with interpretative work based on Poulantzas and his idea that political conflict is rooted in class relations, as well as his concept of class fractions. The data show that the owner or managerial classes of the labour process are those who prefer right-wing candidacies, but also non-traditional ones, while the proletariat appears as the most electorally cohesive class, and this is produced around Bachelet's candidacy.
